Photography exhibition "...mūsų namai po kepurėm, mūsų keliai po dangum..."

All are invited to the 5th floor foyer of the Nature Research Centre to enjoy a photography exhibition "...mūsų namai po kepurėm, mūsų keliai po dangum... (...Our Home under Caps, Our Roads under Sky...) (P. Širvys) dedicated to geologists who investigate the Quaternary – the youngest period of geological times, in particular to Prof. Habil. Dr VALENTINAS BALTRŪNAS – an environmentalist, a public figure and a versatile personality who is celebrating his 70th anniversary. The exhibition was prepared by Dr Bronislavas Karmaza and Dr Violeta Pukelytė from the Laboratory of Quaternary Research.

Exhibition "Ledyno paliktais pėdsakais..."

On 27 October 2017, an exhibition "Ledyno paliktais pėdsakais..." (Along the Traces of Glacier) was opened in the Verkiai Palace. The exhibition invites to enjoy glacier views recorded by Prof. Habil. Dr Valentinas Baltrūnas during his expeditions to the Caucasus, Pamir, and Polar Ural mountains. The glacier has a special meaning for investigators of Quarter – the youngest period of geological time, which is vividly described in Prof. Petras Šinkūnas' book "Mente et malleo".

NRC's representative is elected a councillor of the ISCE

A Full Member of the Lithuanian Acad. of Sci., Prof. Vincas Būda has been elected by election online a councillor of the International Society of Chemical Ecology (ISCE), a global organisation joining researchers of chemical ecology from all continents (https://chemecol.org/councilors.shtml). This is a solemn recognition of scientific achievements of Prof. V. Būda and his scientific team, the more so because he was elected from a long list of candidates from other countries such as the USA or Israel which have considerably more members (voters) in the ISCE than Lithuania has. Prof. Anne-Geneviève Bargnères from the University of Montpelliė, France was elected the President of the ISCE, Prof. Coby Schal from North Carolina State University, USA was elected Vice-President. This year, the meeting of the ISCE took place in Kyoto, Japan; other meetings are scheduled to be held in Budapest, Hungary and Atlanta, USA. In the...

Patent from the State Patent Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania

The State Patent Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania issued a patent to the Nature Research Centre, patent No 6458, issue date 25.09.2017. The patent is granted for a newly invented method to detect mould contamination in grain. This innovation is based on the principle of bionics, i.e. how insects detect moulds according to smell which appears when moulds start degrading grain. The "insect invention" increases sensitivity about 1000-fold(!), compared with the standard method where mould contamination in grain is detected according to mycotoxins. To date, this is a Lithuania patent, which is obligatory seeking an international patent (an application for a European patent has already been filed). The authors of the patent are researchers of the Laboratory of Chemical and Behavioural Ecology in cooperation with a mycologist from the Laboratory of Biodegradation Research. Research was done within the framework of a scientific team project funded by the Research Council of Lithuania.
