Winds of change in littoral fishing: nets changed for traps

The Baltic Sea littoral zone is a ca. 20 m deep and ca. 3 km width littoral belt along the Lithuanian coast, extending 50 km north and south from the Klaipėda port gate. This aquatic area is important both from economic and recreational point of view. It distinguishes by a great productivity and biological diversity; it is important as fish foraging and spawning grounds, as a  spawning migration route and waterfowl migration area, and it is gradually becoming more attractive for seals. Experimental research by NRC's Laboratory of Fish Ecology

The researchers of the Laboratory of Fish Ecology of Nature Research Centre are conducting a research experiment with pike larvae/fry. The growing of pike fry in closed recirculation systems is very complicated – only live food (zooplankton) is used for feeding. Therefore, during the experiment, pike are being grown in creels set in a pond, i.e. "in nature". A creel is composed of a frame floating above water and a silk "cage" under water where fish are kept. Illumination is installed to attract zooplankton to the creels. Illuminated creels look interesting at night
