International scientific-practical seminar on ASH DIEBACK

The researchers from the Laboratory of Plant Pathology of Nature Research Centre together with colleagues from Germany, Estonia and Latvia are running an international scientific project "Consolidating approaches to mitigate the ash dieback disease in the Baltic States and Germany". On 16 October 2019, 9:00 A.M. the Kaunas College of Forestry and Environmental Engineering (Liepų St 1, Girionys, Kaunas district) and on 17 October 2019,  9:00 A.M. the Nature Research Centre (Conference Hall, Akademijos St 2, Vilnius) will host an international seminar where Lithuanian and foreign scientists will share the problems and experience on ash dieback caused by invasive pathogenic fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, threats all over Europe, and search for efficient measures to control the spread of the disease. The society was established on 7 October 1989. It is involved in manor activities to promote the development of research and higher education in Lithuania: prepared the drafts of the first Law on Science and Studies (1991), Law on State Pensions for Scientists (1994) and a number of subordinate legal regulations; presents proposals to the Seimas, Government and Research Council  on the issues of science and studies; from July 1989 the society issues a newspaper "Mokslo Lietuva"  focused on achievements, solutions and problems in the area of research and studies. Baltic-American Freedom Foundation presents initiative "Fragile interface: impact of extreme coastal events on human-landscape interaction and preservation of cultural heritage"

On 7 October 2019, 2:00 p.m., at Nature Research Centre's Conference Hall (Akademijos St. 2) Dr Ilya Buynevich (Temple University, USA) will deliver a lecture "Baltic Megabarriers: Archives of Environmental Changes over 6,000 years". The scientist will present non-invasive research methods and generalise the research carried out together with researchers from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, etc. on the Baltic Seacoast. Dr. Ilya Buynevich was born near the Black Sea, in Ukraine. In 1989 he started his studies in geology at Odessa National University and in 1994 completed his geology studies at Boston University. In 2001 he defended doctoral dissertation and in 2001–2003 pursued postdoctoral studies at Woods Hole Institute of Oceanography to investigate geological phenomena in coastal zones. Funds for national research programmes "Agro-, forest and water systems sustainability" and "Healthy ageing" approved until 2021

The Minister of Education, Science and Sport approved funds for national research programmes "Agro-, forest and water systems sustainability" (Order No V-794) and "Healthy ageing" (Order No V-793) until 2021. The Research Council of Lithuania is ready to open calls for applications for these programmes. Both programmes were launched in 2015. The demand for funds until 2021 is as follows: EUR 2.7 million for "Agro-, forest and water systems sustainability" and EUR 3.2 million for "Healthy ageing". Calls for both programmes are planned to be opened in the beginning of April, application deadlines are planned to be 20 September preliminarily, and projects are intended to be started in February 2020.
